The municipality was formed in 1887.

As of the 2011 India census, Beldanga municipality had a population of 158,898. Males constituted 51% of the population and females 49%. Beldanga had an average literacy rate of 73%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy was 78%, and female literacy was 68%. In 2001, Beldanga had a population of 137,309.

Beldanga is famous for its sari-weaving industry.
